Angela Weissgarber
parent of texas students
She is dismayed their bio teacher said they'd take no questions at all during the evol unit.  This disregards the TEKS standard to discuss the s&w.  This created animosity with the teacher.  And this was not done for other units.  Students should be able to ask questions about evol without fear of recrimination.
SS I agree!!
Weiss  The s&w of all sci theories should continue to be a part of the curriculum.
B asked if they brought it to the attention of the teachers or administrators.
No - she feared grade retribution for her children.
B - perhaps it's an issue just with your school system, since s&w have been in the TEKS for the past 20 years.
B - Dunbar - How do you think the atmosphere in the classroom would change if s&w were eliminated.
Weiss It would make no difference in our system.  I think more districts will become like ours- more kids will not be able to ask questions about evol.  Our teachers should be taught that can address both s&w of theories.
B Mercer - She hit on his real fear - If you daughter believed in the weaknesses of evol, will that make her daughter a lesser doctor?
B Did you look at the textbook your children are using, and see if s&w are addressed in there?
Weiss was unsure.
B I called Ben Stein to see if he could come to Austin, but we couldn't afford him.
B I'm wondering why Weiss hasn't addressed the teacher directly.
Weiss She's an excellent teacher, a really good teacher.  But she didn't cover the s&w in the TEKS.
B Then I wouldn't call her an excellent teacher.

SS So... her daughter wasn't taught the weaknesses of evol, but UT accepted her anyway.  So she must have gotten a good education to go for that pre-med degree!
